Repair Services

A pen that doesn’t write may be a pleasing objet d’art, but it’s also a bit of a useless lump.  It was made to write, after all.  If your pen isn’t living up to its potential, and you don’t have the tools or time to put it right yourself, I’d be happy to help.  Below is a list of the services I offer.

Prices include return postage in North America for basic tracked postal service, and they are not set in stone; it takes no more postage to return three pens than one, which makes for group discounts, and if you want a more premium sort of return service I’m happy to let you pay for it.  I have a little note on the proper wrapping of a pen for shipping you should consider before sending your pen out, and before settling on that more premium service.  In any event, contact me through the form at the foot of the page so we can discuss the repair in consideration; apart from the shipping issue, some pens need two services (sac replacement AND point work), and I don’t just add the two together.  Note also that in any of the services mentioned below, there is no provision for replacement of permanent parts, such as springs or pressure bars; new parts will add to the cost of any repair.

Lever, button, crescent or similar filler resacking: $25.00
-includes cleaning the feed and point (and interior spaces as necessary).

Touchdown/TipDip refurbishment : $30.00
-cleaning as above, new sac, new seals, lubrication.

Snorkel refurbishment (Thin Model and PFM pens): $35.00
-cleaning, new sac, new seals, lubrication.

Vacumatic refurbishment (incl. Parker “51″ with that filler): $35.00
-cleaning, new diaphragm and resealing of section.

Aerometric Parker “51″ Refurbishment: $30.00
-cleaning, replacement of breather tube and/or sac, resealing of section.

Basic point manipulation and/or feed resetting: $25.00 – $45.00
-realignment of tines, adjustment of slit width, restoration of sprung tines within certain limits, smoothing of prominences or the edges of a “foot“. Range of cost indicates that there are several variables; if the point needs to come out of the section, it’s more work and it usually means the sac will have to be replaced as well (depending on the model).

Major point manipulation– reshaping:  $35.00 – $70.00
- Grinding of tipping to amend contact area with paper.  The most common treatments of this sort are reduction of line width (dropping an F to an XF, for example) and turning the point into a stub for more line variation.  It is also possible, within limits, to increase line width as well.  The amount of adjustment of whatever sort is limited by the current tipping on the pen; if there’s not enough to make losing some to the process possible, it can’t be done.  Tipping is more likely to be scanty on vintage pens (both because of wear and because they used less of it), so it is vintage pens that this limitation usually appears in.  I may also decline a radical adjustment, like an ultra-fine line (below 0.15mm) or a “crisp” italic, on the grounds that customer satisfaction is difficult as tipping becomes sharper.

Polishing body : $20.00
-once I can look at the pen, I may contact you to make sure you really want this– sometimes polishing can remove maker’s marks from the body, reducing the value.

Vacuum-filler refurbishment
-I lack the correct tools and, frankly, the experience to approach these repairs.  I will happily recommend reputable and capable people, in whose league I hope to play one day, if you would like to contact me.

Note: Sacs and diaphragms may be subject to failure due to errors in their manufacturing.  As that manufacturing is not done by me, I cannot accept responsibility for that failure.  If sac or diaphragm fails due to material problems, I will replace it within 90 days of returning it to the client without charging for parts or labour, but the client must cover shipping.  If, on the other hand, the failure is through my workmanship (that is, not related to a flaw in the material), the warranty period is one year from return, and shipping is my responsibility.

To reach the Ravens March staff (all one of me) with question, suggestion or perhaps a gentle word of encouragement, please use the form below.
