Return to Fuliwen

2024

Maker: Fuliwen.

Of the various pens by this maker of which it might be said, “Hey, that looks like…,”  the 2024 has chosen an interesting target, in that it is chasing the looks of a pen so far from it in terms of cost.  While I imagine Fuliwen would decline to comment on the similarity in looks, a quick look at the Pens of the Year offered by Graf Faber von Castel will show a surprising degree of visual similarity.  There are some who would object strenuously to this, but I don’t join them.  While the two pens look rather alike, emulation of this sort is common in most consumer goods, and I take it to be more along the lines of clothes made for department stores following the lead of the couture houses.  If it attempted to emulate the markings of the vastly expensive pen, I would be of a different mind entirely.

Doppelgänger-iness aside, this is a fairly typical modern Chinese pen in terms of construction; rather heavy metal underpinnings, finish that asks you to not peer at it too long nor too closely, and extremely firm writing performance.  I’d rate it as somewhat on the high side of the bell-curve of Chinese consumer goods, with the very positive click-down posting of the cap a definite point of recommendation.

Production Run: In current production, likely starting somewhat after the 2004 start of the Pen of the Year efforts mentioned above.

Cost When New: Can be had for about $10.

Size: 13.3 cm long capped, 15.1 cm posted, 12.1 cm uncapped.

Point: Steel.

Body: Metal, with various finishes.

FillerCartridge, capacity approx. 0.6 ml or 1.4 ml (international pattern).

Fuliwen 2024; this finish is very similar to the 2005 Graf Faber von Castel. People who fancy reproduction Japanese swords will also find this a familiar pattern.

The tail is less a false blind cap and more a mock section.
