When Sheaffer introduced the Snorkel in 1952, they already had the
Touchdown "Thin Model" line of pens (link forthcoming) to insert the
new mechanism into, a line with a great variety of grades. The
Sovereign suffered a demotion with the change of mechanism, as in its
Touchdown incarnation it had briefly held a steel cap which bore a the
high-class white dot, while this version simply has the maker's name on
the clip-- the Clipper,
with its more exotic point, took over as the white-dotted steel-cap
model. Apart from the cap, there's no real difference between
this pen and the Saratoga.
Specifications: Medium two-tone 14k gold point (marked M3 below the hallmark) . Snorkel filler. Spring-loaded clip.
Condition: Middling. The cap and body are rather matte with pocket wear, but there are
no dents in the cap nor scratches on the body, and the gold plating
shows no brassing. The feed has a chipped vane, but the chip is
right on the bottom (likely a result of inattentive capping) and does
not affect function,
Repairs:
Seals and sac replaced.
Location: New York and/or Shanghai.
Sold for $38 to a person who apparently travels between New York City and China. I hope it behaves itself while aloft.
