Sheaffer Compact II

Burgundy pen with gold furniture and large clear windows

I highly recommend the detective work regarding this pen over at PenHero.com, which contains almost everything I know about this model of pen (because it's where I learned it).  The gold trim and white dot indicate it's the Mk. II rather than I.  The ink windows indicate it's probably from the earlier end of the production run, although this being a Canadian model this might not be an accurate assumption.

It's very, very small.  The name should indicate that, but when the pen is actually in your hand (or rather disappearing into your hand) it's still surprising just how small it is, because it's got the proportions of a more normally built pen-- have a look at the contemporary 800 or the modern Javelin and you'll see what I mean.  It's very like one of those optical illusion rooms, in which you can't convince your visual cortex that the person you're looking at isn't three feet high.

It is, size aside, a very nice pen.  The point is shockingly smooth for it's size.  This is the first Sheaffer inlaid point I've have a chance to play with, and as big a fan of the previous Triumph point as I am, I will admit that it's a step forward.  The ink window is unusually useful, as opposed to that on the Rotring Core or even the late Sheaffer School, as the fore-edge of the windows is even with that of the cartridge.

Specifications: Extra-fine (possibly even XXF) 14K inlaid gold point.  Cartridge filler.  Spring-loaded tiny little clip. 12.1cm long capped, 14.5cm posted.

Condition: Very good.  A very few tiny scratches from normal use on barrel and cap, no brassing on the furniture.

Repairs: Prolonged soak of the section to clear old ink.

Location:  My Collection

For sale?:
Not at the moment.  As with so many of my pens, I'm somewhat attached to it because it's a relatively uncommon thing, but might be moved by an offer from someone who is absolutely desperate to have one of their own.
