This is simply a lever version
of the vacuum-filling Balance
I've had for a while. Since the interior mechanism of this pen is
more than a simple steel wire, the barrel is not transparent.
Instead, there is a small ink window in the section itself.
The shape of the clip, with the flat-faced ball, limits the pen to
1935 or later, although it was apparently possible
to find low-end Sheaffers with this shape of clip into the 1940s.
With a price code of 350, this was not a top-end pen, so it could
be as recent as a 1945 model. The 1938 catalogue shows this pen,
right down to the 350 price code.
Unlike the vacuum-filler, I've been able to return this pen to
function. Sadly, it has also lost its tipping, and I've also been
driven to reduce it to an italic point. Unlike the extremely
burly Lifetime points, this number 3 has a hair of flex in its make-up,
and it feels very much like a vintage pen.
Specifications:
Gold point without hallmark, bold stub (about 0.9mm, see Repairs
line). Lever
filler.
13.9cm long capped, 15.7cm posted
Condition:
Apart from the issue with the point, rather good. There's one big
scratch ahead of the lever (visible in the picture above). Good
clarity on the window, no ambering of the body, and all the plating is
in decent shape.
Repairs:
The aforementioned point-shaping , and sac replaced with a silicone one
to preserve the colour. Update:
The point has
been replaced with one from a donor pen-- it's actually wider than the
one I amended.
Location: My collection.
