In the Snorkel line-up, the Admiral is the least but one. The
least of the Snorkels, the Special, differed from this in having a
steel point... and in no other regard, and for this one paid a 20%
bonus. The filling mechanism is the same as any other Snorkel. Like this older Admiral,
it was meant as a way for someone to enjoy a rather good pen for not a
vast sum of money, although the $10 price tag it wore in its day works
out to about $75 in 2007, so it's not a cheap pen. Even the Special was about twice the cost to the contemporary buyer than the modern Javelin.
In comparing it to the older version of Admiral, I should point out
that the developments include a departure of the "Feather Touch" point.
The point here is in many respects similar to that laudable item,
with its mere hint of flex, but in addition to being somewhat less
decorative it is also slightly more pedestrian in the way it writes.
This is not an indictment of this pen as much as it is heaping
extra praise on the other-- if taken in isolation, this is a very nice
pen indeed, especially for the low end of a line-up.
Specifications:
Fine 14k gold point (see the "F2" just above the section?).
Snorkel filler. Spring-loaded clip. 14.2cm long
capped, 15.9cm posted..
Condition:
Very good. There are none of the usual tiny marks of use on
the body, and the gold on the cap hardware is entirely intact.
Body impression is crisp, and while not deep is unworn.
Apart from the picture above, I have set myself a "do not post"
rule on this pen to avoid the potential marking of the barrel this
practice can cause, especially on Sheaffers of this age.
Repairs:
Replaced sac and seals, cleaned feeds.
Location: My collection.
