Yet another pen you can't
easily get in North America... although a quick look at Pilot's website
suggests that it may be out of production. I suppose that this
might be technically described as a ring-top pen, although the "ring"
is entirely taken up with trinkets which appear to serve only to
further the mania for かわいい
which doesn't seem likely to relinquish it's grip on Japan any time
soon-- I believe that the trinket is what extends the name of this
particular example to "birdiepet". This is very much a pen aimed
at a tiny little schoolgirl, with tiny little hands. It's a
little more sturdy-seeming than the Sailor
Ink-Pen,
despite it's tinyness, and if the marking on the barrel was to be
believed, its suggested retail price is 800 Yen, which is about the
same as a Parker Reflex., and cheap
enough (especially in the context of Japanese cost-of-living) for most
school kids to get their hands on.
The point has the sort of cheap-yet-smooth nature that one is lead to
believe is standard for the lowest of the low-end pens in Japan.
It's not much wider than the Waterman 52½, but is enough
longer that even non-schoolgirls have a chance at using it... if they
can stand to be seen with it.
Specifications:
Fine steel point. Squeeze-type converter-- one supposes there's
freakishly thin cartridges available as well. 12.4 cm long
capped, 15.1 cm posted.
Condition: Got it new and unsurprisingly haven't used it much.
Repairs: None
For sale?: I'd say
yes, but there's occasional speculation about a second child, who may
prove to be a girl, so I'll hang onto it for now.
