I honestly don't know what to
make of this pen. It has markings to indicate that it's a
Canadian-made Parker Duofold from the second quarter of 1948. The
styling, in a general consumer products of the era sense, backs up the
claim as far as age goes. However, it looks nothing like the post-war Duofolds which were
being made in England, nor does it bear much of a resemblance to the wartime Duofolds from the US
which were being discontinued at about this time. Unlike pretty
much every other Parker I've ever seen, the point impression is arranged marquee-wise.
Now, I know that it's possible for one nation's Parker plant to
wander from the parent house (the British Duofolds are proof enough),
but this thing is so far off the beaten path I might start to look to science
fiction to explain this item.
I'd say that it was meant as a school pen, with its rather low grade
plastic and ultra-simple clip, but the point is very flexible... and
that's something you just don't make for the kiddies. Wherever it
came from, I'm very pleased to have it. I hope to be able to
track down more information about it, so if you've come here trying to
unravel a similar mystery, you know you're not alone.
Specifications: Fine flexible
14k gold
point. Button filler. 13.7 cm long capped, 15.1 cm
posted.
Condition:
Somewhat matte surface from years of duty; the impression is legible
mainly because it's compressed nature is making it stand proud of the
pen's surface. There's a bare hint of plating loss on the lower
edge of the band.
Repairs: Replaced pressure bar (which was just plain gone) and
installed new sac after cleaning interior of pale green ink.
Location: My collection.
For sale?: No.
Apart from the oddity (and somewhat beat-up) nature of it, it's a
gift from a client-- after repairs, I'd returned it with a note that
distilled down said "Weird! Cool!" and he sent it back with some
subsequent items for repair.
