I'm not going to promiscuously
repeat myself as I did for the first Vacumatic-filled
"51" I got my hands on, as you can certainly read that page as
well. What you see here is a slightly up-scale version, with a
gold-filled cap. You'll notice that the clip is the same shape as
that on the later Aerometric version of
the pen, which is actually correct for the last two years of Vacumatic
production. The body impression on this pen is worn to the point
that the date code has been lost (enough remains to be sure it's a
Canadian-made pen), but the point was made in 1948-- the very last year
for Vacumatics.
Specifications:
Medium gold point. Vacumatic filler. 13.7cm long
capped, 15.2cm capped.
Condition: The main problem is dents in the cap-- both caused by
the clip, and both visible in the picture (one is under the clip).
The body is relatively smooth, but there are a couple of shallow
scratches in the hood, and there's the general dulling that years of
use will cause. Personalization on barrel: L. MUNRO, in a cursive
script.
Repairs: Replaced diaphragm after serious struggle with
the old, hard one, which didn't want to let go of anything it was
touching. Suspicious green tint to the old rubber moved me to
soak the internals in an unusually strong ammonia solution against the
possibility of mold.
Location: My collection.
