Eight-ball is the popular name
for this desk set, although the Esterbrook catalogue called it the DB
112WT-- the number referred to the base in black (in colour, it was a
116), with a Model W pen, T being the code for black body. DB?
"Desk Base." Esterbrook is fairly well known for their desk
pens, and for some years were the suppliers of things like this to the
US President (scroll down this page to see this very model embossed
presidentially).
The business end of these pens was very much like that of Esterbrook's J models, without the
threads for a cap-- the section was internally threaded to take the
"Re-New" point, allowing a lot of variety in the kind of writing one
might get out of the pen.
Specifications: Pen arrived equipped
with 9556 Fine Firm point. Lever filler. 15.8 cm
long to face of section.
Condition: The previous owner didn't quite get the whole Re-New
point thing, and hadn't screwed it in deeply enough. As a result,
the section (which is hard rubber) was partially exposed to light for a
period long enough to render a ring of olive discolouration at the
joint. That and some small scuffs in the tail are the extent of
damage.
Repairs: Replaced sac, and reset section in barrel (the
point wasn't in it properly, and the it wasn't in the body properly-- I
suspect yanking on the point trying to remove it).
Location: My collection.
